Case Studies

In addition to our regular services for private sector, single family homes, we are pioneering some innovative technologies and solutions for markets that have historically been hard to reach with energy conservation and efficiency programs, including small businesses, low-income residences and military housing. Below are some summaries of a couple of case studies in these market demographics, and in the sidebar, there are downloadable white papers with the full details of the projects.

Small business

In summer 2015, we installed energy and water-saving fixtures at a vacation hostel on the North Shore of Oahu. Six months later, we evaluated the results from those installations and found the following results:

  • 13 month average monthly energy usage reduction: 490 kWh
  • 13 month average water usage reduction: 21,000 gallons
  • Same month energy reduction: 1300 kWh
  • Same month water reduction: 19,000 gallons
  • Estimated annualized savings: $2,950
  • Estimated annual carbon emission reduction:
  • Payback period: 4.6 months
  • One year return on investment: 61%

Low-income housing direct install programs

Hawaii Energy Free Home Efficiency Pilot Program

In spring 2016, we completed a free home efficiency pilot program for renters and low-income families in partnership with Hawaii Energy. 12,572 home efficiency products were directly installed into 579 homes on the islands of Oahu and Maui in this program, resulting in a statewide reduction of 485,548 kWh/year and an average estimated savings of $167,514.206 or $289 per home annually.

Catholic Charities

In spring 2015, we installed efficiency hardware and maintained large appliances at a 10 bedroom, 5 bath low-income senior living duplex in Kalihi, Hawaii, with the following results:

  • 19 month average monthly energy usage reduction: 117 kWh, 10.29%
  • 19 month average water usage reduction: 2,700 gallons, 18.01%
  • Same month energy reductions: 168.9 kWh
  • Same month water reduction: 3,000 gallons
  • Estimated annualized savings: $717.41
  • Estimated annual carbon emission reduction: 2,456.69 pounds of CO2 equivalents
  • Payback period: 3.7 months
  • One year return on investment: 69.33%

Schools

In summer 2016, we completed a pilot program at a Hawaii Department of Education elementary school on Oahu, which included education, survey research, and electronic hardware installations (timers and advanced power strips).

  • 6 advanced power strips were installed, which will save an estimated 616.8 kWh per year or $195.96
  • 2 PowerDown timers installed on water coolers, which will save an estimated 1576 kWh per year, or $500.70
  • 51 9 watt (60 watt equivalent) LED lamps were delivered to teachers to use at home or in the classroom, and if they are used similar to a residential setting, will save 5472.74 kWh or $1738.69 per year
